Akrotiri Archaeological Site photo copyrighted by: Galen R. Frysinger The archaeological site of Akrotiri is the name given to a small Minoan
settlement located on the volcanic island of Thera in the Aegean Sea.
It is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean.
Greek archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos excavated Akrotiri in the late 1960s and
early 1970s; and then Christos Doumas took over.
