state and ritual center where grand princes were proclaimed and appendage princes swore allegiance to them, Czars were enthroned and, later, emperors were crowned. In 1472 the Pskov architects Kryvtsov and Myshkin began work on the new cathedral but two years later, just before its completion, a rare earthquake shook the Rus
capital and caused the building to collapse.
