Catherine Palace History photo copyrighted by: Galen R. Frysinger The grandiose palace was built in 1756. It's of course been damaged several times, most recently during World War II.
The northern wing of Catherine Palace is topped by the five golden domes of the Palace Chapel. Although over 200 pounds of gold were originally used to gild the exterior of the palace, today it is just gold paint.
