Chihuahua city photo copyrighted by: Galen R. Frysinger The city of Chihuahua was founded on October 12, 1709 by the Spanish explorer
Antonio Deza y Ulloa, originally as San Francisco de Cuellar, changing to the
present name of Chihuahua in the year 1824. The term stems from the Nahuatl word "Xicuahua", which means "dry, sandy place".
