wisdom in the ancient world, functioning as such from the 7th century BC until the 4th
century AD, dwindling fast upon the advent of Orthodox Christianity.
It was abolished in 393 AD by Emperor Theodosius, who made Christianity
the official religion of the Byzantine Empire.
