Democracy Monument photo copyrighted by: Alan Ingram The Democracy Monument was built to commemorate the June 1932 military coup that established the constitutional monarchy in the then Kingdom of Siam. It was commissioned by the military ruler of Thailand, Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram @ Phibun, in 1939. Democracy Monument in Banglamphu on Ratchadamnoen Road looks so much more impressive at night when the lights are turned up and the traffic dies down. The monument appears every night on Thai TV with the National Anthem.
