Parthenon Building photo copyrighted by: Galen R. Frysinger The Parthenon was designed by Phidias, a famous sculptor, at the behest of
Pericles, a Greek politician credited with the founding of the city of Athens and with stimulating the so-called "Golden Age of Greece".
The three main types of columns used in Greek temples and other public buildings
are Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.
In the 5th century CE the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church.
