Parthenon Cella photo copyrighted by: Galen R. Frysinger Work on the temple continued until 432; the Parthenon, then, represents the
tangible and visible efflorescence of Athenian imperial power, unencumbered by
the depradations of the Peloponnesian War.
The eastern cella was dedicated to Athena Polias and the western cella was
dedicated to Athena Parthenos, "the Virgin," from which the whole building
became known as the Parthenon.
