History relates that Patzcuaro was the principal religious center in the pre-Hispanic era during the Purepecha Empire, where it is said that the settlers decided the door to the sky so that the gods could ascend and descend. As a city, Patzcuaro is an
example of indigenous colonial architecture with straight lines and spacious plazas.
