From around the eighth century B.C. until 59 B.C., central Italy was ruled by the Etruscans who preferred to build their northernmost stronghold on the hill top where modern day Fiesole is located. The Roman Forum was the marketplace of Rome and also the business district and civic center. It was the center of political and social activity.
