The Palace photo copyrighted by: Galen R. Frysinger The Palace at Palenque consists of a series of vaulted galleries and rooms
arranged around interior courtyards, and is the result of a long and complex
evolution. The earliest building on the upper terrace is House E, a unique structure with white-washed walls and polychromed floral decorations. It also possesses an unusual roof, which mimics the appearance of thatch, which was the material used to roof the houses of common, non-elite structures.
