Vatican Church photo copyrighted by: Alan Ingram The Vatican City State is situated on the Vatican hill, on the right bank of the Tiber River, within the city of Rome. The church is connected to the Piazza di Spagna via a long staircase, known as the Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti or Spanish Steps. The idea of connecting the church with the piazza di Spagna originates from the 17th century. The French also planned on adding a statue of King Louis XIV of France at the top of the staircase.
