 Wat Chedi Luang photo copyrighted by: Alan Ingram Wat Chedi Luang is one of the oldest and most important temples in Chiang Mai. Located in the center of the city, the temple’s main structure is Chedi Luang, which was completed in 1481. During its heyday it reached 96 meters, and was the highest structure in Chiang Mai for over 500 years. In 1468, the Emerald Buddha was installed in the temple’s eastern niche. In
1545, the top 30-m of the temple collapsed following an earthquake and shortly
after (in 1551) the Emerald Buddha was moved to Luang Prabang in Laos .
