Wiener Stephansdom photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow The first church to occupy the site of Stephansdom's Cathedral was a Romanesque sanctuary,
which was replaced by a basilica in 1147 AD.
The south tower is named Alter Steffl, and was built between 1359 and 1433.
