Stephansdom Building photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow The Gothic cathedral was first built in 1147 AD and its most recognizable characteristic,
the diamond-patterned tile roof, was added in 1952.
After 1511, building in the Gothic style ceased; the unfinished North Tower, 224 feet high,
was capped with a makeshift Renaissance spire in 1579.
