Umayyad Mosque History photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow Around 708 AD, Umayyad Caliph Khalild Ibn al-Walid began the work which would make Umayyad
a monument to Islam on a grand scale - notably the greatest of that time.
The minarets date from the time of al-Walid with some reconstruction around 1340 and 1488.
