Palacio Real photos copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow
The Palacio Real is the largest palace in Europe. The actual name is the Palacio
Oriente (East Palace), but it is hardly ever referred to by that name. It stands on a ridge above the Manzanares River and Campo del Moro park. The palace is still used for head of state visits and other ceremonies. It was used by the Kings and Queen of Spain from 1734 until 1931.
Philip II began the present palace with the same architects who worked on El Escorial, Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera.
