San Marco’s Square is the heart of Venice. Every year visited by millions of tourists, it contains the most famous buildings of the city: the Basilica of San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, the Campanile (the big bell tower), the Old and New Procurati and the Biblioteca
Marciana. Throughout the centuries the piazza has been the religious, political and social heart of the city and consequently, the theater of all its great events: the return from a naval victory, the arrival of a king or ambassador from afar, a religious ceremony, Carnival. Even now Piazza San Marco is often the theater of great events.
